Craig Votes Against Congress' Tax and Spend Budget

Idaho Senator Larry Craig today voted against the Fiscal Year 2009 Budget Resolution conference report, predicting it will pave the way for increased government spending and massive tax increases on America's families.

The bill narrowly passed the Senate by a near party line vote of 48 to 45.

"At a time when most Americans are struggling with a slowing economy and rising food and fuel costs, it is completely irresponsible for Congress to pass a budget that lays out the framework to raise taxes on families," Craig said. "The average Idaho family is going to be paying over $2,000 more in taxes with this budget, a phenomenal burden in our current economic conditions.

"I'm very disappointed that this budget does nothing to address out-of-control spending. Instead of trying to balance the budget, the Democratic majority wants to spend more, and they want the average family to pay for it."

The Budget Resolution, which is not signed into law by the President, outlines Congress' taxing and spending priorities and provides a framework that guides future taxing and spending legislation.

Craig reiterated that he will continue to work to lessen the tax burden on hard-working taxpayers and restore fiscal accountability to Washington.
